Jay E. Adams, Ph. D.
In his book Back to the Blackboard (1982 - revised 1998), Dr. Adams aptly described the proper covenant relationship between school and home in terms of 4 walls: the home being 3 and the school the fourth to complete the structure. This idea along with the limited use of grading in early elementary and the importance of projects, have had a major impact on our foundations as a covenant Christian school.
David Elkind, Ph D.
An early influence on the school’s philosophy of early childhood education was that of David Elkind. Elkind’s books The Hurried Child (1981, 1988) and Miseducation (1985) effectively debunked the cultural definition of the “competent” child and that preschoolers had an alleged need for formal academic instruction. He gave a reasonable warning against “hurrying” at any age, principles interwoven throughout our philosophy. Elkind described the consequences of such hurrying in a subsequent book, Ties That Stress (1995).
Don Graham’s book Teaching Redemptively (published by ACSI in 2003) has had a remarkable impact on the formation of our school, motivating our belief that classrooms are an atmosphere of grace rather than performance. The principles presented by Graham are a coherent application of grace and the Gospel in schooling, as well as a thoughtful look at the potential of students as image-bearers of Christ.
Charlotte M. Mason (1842-1923)
Miss Mason’s ideas of education as an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life have helped provide a biblical, common sense framework on how to respect and teach children as persons and not products. Our curriculum includes the Mason ideals of “living books,” nature study, and picture study, as well as a special emphasis on poetry, Shakespeare, and narration. Her ideas are aptly summarized in When Children Love to Learn (2004), required reading for all perspective Perimeter School parents. Other books that parents are strongly encouraged to read include: For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay, The Original Homeschooling Series (6 Volumes) by Charlotte Mason, The Story of Charlotte Mason by Essex Cholmondley, and Charlotte Mason Reviewed by Jenny King.
Raymond and Dorothy Moore
In the early formation of our school, the book Home Grown Kids (1981) introduced us to unique ideas of child development and parents being responsible and significant contributors to their children’s education. These ideas profoundly impacted the structure and programs of our school, especially in the development of Enrichment Days. On a visit to the school campus in 1988, the Moores commended our model and affirmed the establishment of our Homeschool Satellite Program, a cooperative serving parents of homeschoolers.
Paul and Tedd Tripp
In recent years, the publications of these two men have greatly impacted the ideas and practices of this school, focusing us on the receptivity of our student’s hearts as the essential measure of their education. Among others, these writings include Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp and The Age of Opportunity by Paul Tripp.
Randy and Carol Pope
In 1983, Randy and Carol Pope, Perimeter Church’s senior pastor and his wife, began the ministry of Perimeter School as a covenant school. The particular nature of our covenant school required faith and vision to implement. It was and still is considered a unique model among Christian schools today. Our commitment to the covenant child, respected and treasured as a person created in God's image, remains the foundation of our school.
