2018-2019 auditions scheduled

Mark your calendars! Auditions for both the fall play and spring musical will be held August 20th - 24th. Students in fourth - eighth grade are welcome to audition. Auditions will involve singing a short section of a song and reading from a script or playing theatre games. Song choices should be from a musical, not pop or worship songs. We may provide specific songs for the audition. Watch for the summer email and check back here for more details and to sign up for an audition time. See below for more details on the fall and spring productions, rehearsal schedules, and more.

DRAMA SCREENING FOR 6TH AND 7TH GRADE BOYS

TUESDAY, APRIL 24TH FROM 3:20 - 4:30 PM

To enable us to determine if we have enough interested boys to do a full-length musical with a strong male lead next year, we would like to do an informal screening of any interested current 6th and 7th grade boys! No preparation is needed! It will be done in a group with Mrs. Langston’s help in the Music Rehearsal Room from 3:20-4:30 PM. THIS IS NOT AN AUDITION AND DOES NOT IN ANY WAY DETERMINE WHO MAY BE CAST NEXT FALL. This is solely to help us determine if we are able to choose a musical like Newsies or if we need to find something that is not so dependent on a core of boys. We know that 6th and 7th graders may have vocal changes even within the next few months, which is another reason why this should not be seen as an audition in any way. Please know that even though it is historically inaccurate, we would cast girls and boys as ‘newsies,’ unlike the movie and the Broadway show.

You may expect auditions for the 2018 - 2019 school year to occur the second week of school and be open to boys and girls in grades 4 - 8. We will cast both productions from that audition. We would like to apologize for using poor judgment this spring when we invited a 4th grader to participate when other students in 4th grade had not been allowed to audition. We understand that this could communicate a lack of integrity in our process. While the student did an excellent job, we were wrong to put a family in that position and go against our announced policy. While we had seen this child in the fall auditions, we were wrong to go against our stated policy for the spring show. We hope you will grant us the grace to acknowledge this as an exception and an error in judgment to how we typically handle casting. In the future we will not make this mistake again. We are so sorry for any confusion, pain, or hurt that this caused.

Looking forward to an exciting 2018 - 2019 dramatic arts year,

Valerie Scott, Drama Department Administrator

SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS

Fourth through eighth grade students are invited to audition for the extracurricular school productions. Perimeter School hosts one production each semester exposing students to use their God-given theatrical gifts and skills, as well as learn teamwork, responsibility, and self-confidence.

ELECTIVE COURSE

Middle school students may take drama as an elective course and often participate in local and regional theater conferences. Perimeter School is a member of The Educational Theatre Association and hosts a Junior Thespians International Honor Society Troupe.

DRAMA CLASSES

Beginning in pre-first grade, students may participate in drama classes as an extracurricular activity. Registration opens in the Spring for the following year.

Drama classes teach young actors the basics of stage presence, how to participate as an audience member, performance techniques, and how to engage a cast environment. Class size is limited.
